Planning Your Trip

On-board the GrowlerSummer Fishing :

If you're planning a trip during summer, when we would fish either on wrecks or rough ground, rods should be 30 - 50 pound class boat rods, fitted with a 4/0 size multiplier reel, loaded with either braid or monofilament line of 40 - 50 pounds breaking strain. Also bring a lightweight rod for Gilling and Mackerel fishing. A 4 -10oz class uptiding rod, fitted with a fixed spool or small multiplier reel loaded with 30 pound breaking strain monofilament line will do the job.

When fishing for Cod, Ling, Coalfish and Haddock, good basic baits to use are Mackerel and Squid.

Also bring a selection of jiggers, weights, plain and treble hooks (7/0 upwards), hokkia lure rigs fitted with 7/0 hooks, muppets, a selection of swivels, snaprings and heavy duty french booms for bottom fishing. When fishing for Pollack and Mackerel, bring Mackerel feathers, redgills and jellies, 5/0 hooks, lightweight french booms and lighter weights.

Winter Fishing :

Winter time brings us to uptide fishing, hard inshore, lying at anchor.

Good Cod, up to 29 pounds, have been caught by Whitby boats in previous uptiding seasons, (November - March).

Good baits for uptiding are Squid, Lugworm, Mussels and Peeler Crab.

Rods should be 4 - 10oz class uptiding rods, fitted with a fixed spool or small multiplier reel, loaded with 30 pound breaking strain monofilament line. A heavy beachcasting rod will do the job. Also bring a selection of gripper weights, small swivels, hooks etc.

Mackerel shoals begin to show from around May right through to Autumn, so natural bait is available. It's always advisable to bring some frozen bait though - good all-round baits to bring are Mackerel in summer and Squid in winter.

Don't worry if you don't have any of the tackle required - we carry 6 full sets of both boat and uptiding rods and reels, which are available for hire with terminal tackle. The tip rings don't fall off our hire rods, the rings aren't held on with electrical tape and reels are multipliers, not Scarborough Pin fixed on with Jubilee clips ! Fixed spool reels are also available on uptiding rods if you prefer. We also have all of the terminal tackle on board that you will require, which we sell at cost.

Freezer facilities are also available.
